Dupont was founded in the year 1802. The company had been operational for almost 216 years now. The founder of the company was Eleuthere Irenee du Pont. The company was founded mainly as a gunpowder mill. The main reason that Du Pont has started its gunpowder business because he had noticed how the gunpowder industry of the USA, was lagging behind Europe. By the year of the mid-nineteenth century, the company had become the largest supplier of various types of gunpowder to the US military. The company had supplied almost half of the gunpowder used by the Union Army in the American Civil War.
